Just Local: Melon and Watermelon
More and more organic farms appear in Ukraine, the range of products of which can now be easily found on the shelves of Odessa supermarkets. Now is the time for watermelons and melons: they are delicious, sweet and, in addition, contain a large amount of sugar (glucose and fructose). They can easily replace desserts.
We already wrote about organic chips made from watermelons and melons, which are produced in the Odessa region. “Danube Agrarian” is the first among Ukrainian organic producers to grow watermelons and melons with drip irrigation. Combined with the abundance of the sun, they are sweet, firm and tasty.
It is worth noting that this is one of the few companies in Ukraine specialising in the production of agricultural products without the use of chemicals.
Watermelons and melons are grown in the farm, which is located in a picturesque place, in the very South of Ukraine: the village of Safyany (Odessa region), a unique geographical location at 45 parallel.
For the cultivation of watermelons and melons, the farm uses organic Dutch seeds. To increase yields, hives are installed in the season, because bees increase yields by 5-15%.
In the same field they plant legumes, because in their roots there are nodules of live bacteria, capable of converting nitrogen from the air into a form that is assimilated by plants. Thus, there is a natural enrichment of the ground with nitrogen. Such “green fertilizers” are a natural alternative to mineral fertilizers, like nitrates.
All products of the “Danube Agrarian” are not processed in any way for long-term storage. After harvesting, the products are sent to refrigerators in compliance with the optimal temperature regime. And now they can be easily bought on the shelves of all Santim supermarkets.
Watermelon

The oversized red striped berries are loved all over the world. From the end of summer, the whole autumn, you can enjoy the juicy pulp of the fruit, passing away the hot days. It is worth reminding that watermelon is approximately 90-95% water. Moreover, the high water content of watermelon is one of the reasons why consuming this product makes us feel full.
How to choose a watermelon?
A high-quality fruit should look fresh, whole, clean externally. An earthen spot also testifies to the ripeness of the watermelon – the place where the watermelon lay on the ground. Sunlight does not enter there, which means that chlorophyll (the pigment that colours plants in green) is not produced there. It should be bright yellow. The brighter the better.
Melons

Melon is the embodiment of fertility. Even the word itself means “big, bloated”. And the ancient Greek pepon translates as “cooked”, and “cooked by the sun”. The sun baked such a big, beautiful melon in its summer hearth.
How to choose a melon?
Bringing an uncut melon to your face and trying to catch the scent is the best way to make the right choice.
On a hot southern evening, cocktails are usually decorated with skewers, on which a piece of melon will certainly be worn. Shrimps fried on a summer cottage barbecue go to her as if she was born not in the Central Asian steppes, but on the seashore. A spicy bright chili also goes to her. Melon produces summer supplies – marmalades and jellies. It chills on a hot summer day, turning into a delicate ice cream. And, of course, summer salads cannot do without melons.

Santim Advice
Cut the melon or watermelon, remove the grains and carefully cut into cubes with a side of one and a half centimeters. Too small pieces may lose the shape. If you have a special spoon with which you can cut perfect balls from soft fruits, then give up the cubes and make exactly the balls. These balls can be combined with cherry tomatoes and mozzarella balls of the same size, and you will get a wonderful beauty gastronomic structure from exceptionally round ingredients.
Also try a watermelon cocktail. Whisk the seedless watermelon, honey and lemon juice in a blender. Fill 3/4 tall glasses with crushed ice. Pour in the watermelon mixture. You can serve!

Enjoy!

“Mustache Funk” is online
In the late sixties of the last century, the USSR began to create musical groups designed to become analogues of Western rock bands. The next decade was a “golden” era of Ukrainian pop music. The film “mustache funk” explores the phenomenon of Ukrainian rock, which has not lost its relevance to this day.
The release of a documentary about Ukrainian music or music in Ukrainian is a rarity. “Mustache Funk” is a movie for the big screen, which was shown at festivals last year, and now it has finally reached full-scale rental. The film was shot entirely at public expense – UAH 1.7 million with the support of the Ukrainian State Film Agency.
The author of the idea and script was a music journalist, ex-manager of the groups “Ocean Elzy” and “Skryabin” Vitaly Bardetsky. The film was shot in 2019, but due to a pandemic and other delays, it will be released only in June 2021.
The film is available worldwide with English subtitles on Takflix.
In general, the genre of “mustache funk” does not exist. More precisely, it did not exist until it was invented by the filmmakers and began to be popularized. Now, it is clearly associated with the Ukrainian pop music of the 60s and 70s, which absorbed folk motifs and syncopated American rhythms.
A film about the “golden age of Ukrainian popular music”
“Mustache Funk” tells the story of Ukrainian ensembles that began to appear en masse in the 1960s under the direction of the USSR Politburo. They were supposed to replace the Soviet youth with Western rock bands, but everything went wrong: instead of a party loyal to Ukraine, an original modern scene was born.
When the harsh totalitarian regime was a little weakened, young people fell in love with the “capitalist declining sounds” that sounded from vinyl records. Those who knew how to play musical instruments were already actively copying the Beatles, but they did not have time to give a few concerts, as the party organized everything in its own way, taking the entertainment under some control.

Now, the musicians had a task to gather bands that could capture the attention of music lovers who were delighted with the western rock. However, they could not be named a group, but a VIA (vocal-instrumental ensemble). And it’s important to note that it is the countryside that formed the basis of a unique style that had no analogues in the world.
So, numerous VIAs appeared all over Ukraine, among which there were art enthusiasts and quite professional groups, which quickly became popular (for example, “Vodogray”, “Patterns of Ways”, “Living Water” and “Svityaz”). Some of them gravitated to rock and roll, some played swing and boogie, and some were fond of funk, there were even experimenters (such as the ensemble “Opryshky”, whose work can be called the first psychedelic Ukrainian year). They knew world music, in some ways even openly copied it, but over time, these musicians invented their own unique direction, adding to the songs a traditional folk sound with polyphony and Western rhythms. The so-called VIA used to gather stadiums, but now their songs are almost forgotten.
It is an accurate story about original Ukrainian music, which was much more interesting and progressive than the Soviet views on culture.

This is told in the documentary by the VIA participants themselves, who willingly share their memories and laugh at how the Iron Curtain could not stop the thirst for quality music. Surprisingly, during all this time, the phenomenon of original Ukrainian art, which existed in the 60’s and 70’s, has not received any name. So the creators of the tape took the initiative and came up with the name mustache funk.
Why mustache? It’s very simple – most members of famous men’s bands proudly wore mustaches, it is noticeable even on the covers of records.

Valentin Vasyanovich’s new film “Reflection” is included in the main competition programme and competes for the main award of the festival: the “Golden Lion”. The plot tells the story of a volunteer doctor who, after returning, tries to return to everyday life. He is talking to his ex-wife and 12-year-old daughter, who is also traumatized by the loss of her lover in the war.
Film project won during the 11th pitching of Ukrainian State Film Agency; ₴25. mil. UAH of state funding was awarded, which represents 80% of the total budget of ₴31.3 mil. UAH. It is worth reminding that Valentyn Vasyanovych won best film in the Horizons section of the Venice Film Festival for “Atlantis” in 2019.

The world premiere of Oleg Sentsov’s film “Rhino” is scheduled take place on September 9, 2021 in the Orizzonti section. The story centers around a ghanster Rhino, who’s trying to survive Ukraine’s “wild 90s”. Rhino has only known power and cruelty, but with nothing left to lose, he could finally find a chance at redemption. Sensov also shared that the prototype for the film’s main character, Rhino, was one of Sentsov’s friends.
Filming began in July 2020 and ended in December 2020 and took place in Kryvyi Rih, Lviv and Kyiv. The film is a co-production of Ukraine, Poland and Germany.

Peter Kerekesh’s film “Censor” is a joint production of Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Ukraine. The author is a Slovak documentary film director, winner of film festivals in Berlin, Leipzig and Toronto. “Censor” is his first feature film. In 2014, he wanted to make a documentary about prison censors in different cultures. After the start of filming in Ukraine, the creators decided to make a full-length feature film instead of a documentary.
The film tells the story of a young woman Lesya, who was sentenced to imprisonment in a correctional facility in Odessa. She has just given birth to her first child and has entered a world inhabited only by women: prisoners, nurses and caretakers, women of all ages, wives and widows, daughters, sisters, pregnant women, etc. If not for the colour of the uniform, sometimes it would be difficult to say who is who.

The relevant certificate was approved by the competent authorities of the two countries. The opening of the market became possible thanks to the joint work of diplomats of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and specialists of the State Food and Consumer Service.

At the same time, our manufacturers are improving their positions. In order to make them even more competitive and strong, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, together with the State Food and Consumer Service, continues to open up new markets.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and the State Food and Consumer Service are working together to open new markets for Ukrainian exports, providing support to manufacturers and removing technical barriers to trade, as well as providing government guarantees regarding compliance with the requirements of partner countries, the report said.
