Minister of Justice of Ukraine Denys Maliuska met with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Italian Republic Pier Francesco Zazo. The parties discussed, among other things, the need to create an international register of damages caused by Russia as a result of armed aggression against our country.

Denys Maliuska informed the Ambassador that in connection with the large-scale military aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine and the unprecedented amount of damage and destruction caused to the state, legal entities registered in Ukraine and civilians of our country, the authorities are actively working to record the losses in order to further recover them from the aggressor country.

In addition, the Minister of Justice of Ukraine stressed the need to bring to justice those responsible for the crimes of aggression. He noted that Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine is criminal in nature. It was started and is being conducted in violation of the basic principle of international law - the prohibition of the use of force or threat of force against the territorial integrity and political independence of another state. It has also become a prerequisite for the commission of mass atrocities and other large-scale crimes by members of the aggressor state's military formations, contrary to the imperative norms of international humanitarian law and international human rights law.

"Since none of the scenarios that would provide the International Criminal Court with jurisdiction over the crime of aggression in the context of the war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine is currently realistic, the establishment of a Special Tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine is relevant. In fact, the establishment of such a tribunal is the only opportunity to bring the top political and military leadership of the Russian Federation to justice for committing such a crime. It is important to emphasize that the establishment of the Special Tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine is a complement to the work of the International Criminal Court, not an opposition to it. We are strongly convinced that the international community will act without leniency to bring the Russian regime to justice for the atrocities and destruction in our country," the Ukrainian Minister of Justice stressed.

Pier Francesco Zazo, in his turn, assured of the support for Ukraine in its aspiration to punish the perpetrators of war crimes in accordance with internationally recognized legal norms.
