In Russia, the American foundation "Wikimedia Foundation Inc", which manages the online encyclopedia "Wikipedia", was fined 2 million rubles for refusing to "remove fakes about a Russian special operation" ("special operation" in the Russian Federation is called a full-scale invasion of Ukraine).

Izvestia writes about this with reference to the court's decision.

"The court ruled to find the Wikimedia organization guilty of Part 2 of Article 13.41 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (failure to delete information prohibited in Russia) and to impose a fine of 2 million rubles on it," the court said in a statement.

At the same time, the reason for drawing up a protocol on an administrative offense was an article published in "Wikipedia", which allegedly contains "unreliable information about a special operation" ("special operation" is what Russia calls a full-scale invasion of Ukraine).

  • The "Wikimedia Foundation" is appealing in a Russian court a fine of almost 90,000 dollars, which was issued to the Russian "Wikipedia" for an article about the Russian invasion of Ukraine and war crimes in Buch and other cities.
  • At the start of the large-scale Russian invasion, Russian authorities warned Wikipedia on March 2 that it would block it if the online encyclopedia did not remove or correct an article about Russian armed aggression in Ukraine and the world's reaction. The Russian authorities sent a second warning to "Wikipedia" at the end of March, but assumed that everything could be fined for several million rubles.
  • In April, Roskomnadzor sent a reprimand to the Russian-language Wikipedia, saying that the truth about the invasion of Ukraine and the chauvinism of the Russian president in relations with the neighboring country was written on the page of the Internet encyclopedia about Putin.
  • At the end of May, Russia adopted a draft law that requires the owners of large Internet resources to register their representative offices in Russia. The Wikimedia Foundation responded that opening the representative office would mean that Russian security forces would be able to monitor and punish Wikipedia for information on its web pages that is not convenient for the Kremlin.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin said it would be good to establish an alternative Russian Wikipedia that the Kremlin would control.
