The silver medal of the World Sambo Championship, which took place in the Serbian city of Novi Sad, was won by the Police Major Anatolii Voloshynov, teacher at the Department of tactical, fire and physical training of the Odessa State University of Internal Affairs.

Sambo is a Soviet martial art and an internationally-practised combat sport.

The word sambo is an acronym of samozashchita bez oruzhiya (in Russian: самозащита без оружия), which is literally translated into "self-defence without weapons".

Sambo is relatively modern since its development began in the early 1920s by the Soviet NKVD and Red Army to improve hand-to-hand combat abilities of the servicemen.

It was intended to be a merger of the most effective techniques of other martial arts. As reported by the university, the Ukrainian champion took the second place in the "combat sambo" section, weight category up to 100 kg, losing in the final against the Cameroonian Seyd Nji Mulukh.

Bronze was awarded to the Lithuanian Teodoras Aukstuolis.

Last year, Voloshynov won the gold medal in the European Cup and became the second in the continental championship.

In total, on November 6, Ukrainian Sambo wrestlers received six medals, including one gold. In the category up to 74 kg, Vladislav Rudnev from Donetsk region became the world champion in combat sambo for the third time in a row.

A day earlier, when the medals were shared by the juniors, the Ukrainians managed to get ten awards.
