According to the Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, Ukraine, the European Commission and the United Nations will work together to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals through innovation and technology.

Ukraine has joined the UN Global Pilot Program on STI for SDGs Roadmaps to support countries in developing roadmaps to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals through science, technology and innovation. The program will start in Ukraine in March 2021.

Participation in such a UN program will help Ukraine develop a comprehensive national policy for the development of science, technology and innovation. Policy preparation will be based on a multi-stakeholder analysis as well as on the European Commission's smart specialization approach. This will make the policy as realistic as possible for future implementation.

There are many talented scientists working in Ukraine, whose developments should be used for the development of the national economy and be a contribution to the future of next generations. Ukrainians can also share their experiences with foreign counterparts, which will be facilitated by Ukraine's participation in the UN Global Pilot Program. Such a synergy of efforts will be an impetus for economic growth after COVID-19 pandemic, and will also contribute to the implementation of the green transformation policy.

Ukraine's partners in the UN Global Pilot Program are the European Commission's Joint Research Center (JRC) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

In particular, in the process of the implementation of the UN Global Pilot Program in Ukraine, there will be taken into account Ukraine's existing experience in cooperation with the European Commission's Joint Research Center for the implementation of smart specializations in the regions, as well as UNIDO's approach to green industrial transformation.

According to the Agenda and Action Program for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted in Addis Ababa in 2015, science, technology and innovation (STI) are among the key tools for achieving SDGs. To put this approach into practice, the UN has established the Technology Assistance Mechanism and the UN Interagency Task Force on STI for SDGs at the global level, which in 2018 launched the Global STI Pilot Program for SDGs Roadmaps. Key UN agencies and institutions, including the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, UNIDO, UNESCO, UNCTAD and the European Commission's Joint Research Center (JRC), are participating in the project and sharing their STI methodologies for SDGs.
