On August 12, servicemen of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, along with military personnel from the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense, landed on Zmeiiniy (Snake) Island and installed a border marker. The Chairman of the State Border Guard Service, Serhiy Deineko, also participated in this important event.
The head of the border agency noted that with the full support of the military personnel of the Izmail Border Detachment and the Main Intelligence Directorate, historical justice has been restored.
"A border marker has been installed on Snake Island. The previous one, which was here before the full-scale invasion, was brazenly destroyed by the Russian occupiers. The next border marker will be installed in our Ukrainian Crimea after its liberation by the Armed Forces of Ukraine," said Serhiy Deineko, Chairman of the State Border Guard Service.
"We remember everyone who liberated Snake Island, we remember everyone who liberates every piece of our land. And we will definitely return all our territory. Glory to Ukraine," noted Deputy Head of the Main Intelligence Directorate, Dmytro Usov.
Snake Island is a symbol of Ukrainian resilience. During the full-scale invasion by Russia, it was defended by border guards and Ukrainian military personnel. Many of them fell into Russian captivity. Unfortunately, some are still in captivity, and Ukraine is doing everything possible to bring them home.
While defending the island, a Ukrainian border guard uttered words that pointed the direction to a Russian ship. This phrase became iconic and a symbol of Ukraine's resistance in the war with Russia, inspiring the entire Ukrainian nation to fight.
After intense battles, Ukrainian military personnel liberated the island from occupiers and regained control over it at the end of June last year.
