An installation titled 'Battle for Light' was opened at Kontraktova Square in Kyiv, featuring a destroyed transformer from one of DTEK's thermal power plants, ruined by Russia.
This transformer was once an important part of one of DTEK's thermal power plants. Like dozens of others, it was damaged by Russian shelling—it endured several hits from shrapnel and was ultimately destroyed completely.
It allows Ukrainians to see and assess the scale of destruction of Ukraine's energy infrastructure, which has suffered over 1,000 Russian attacks since October 2022. As a result, the enemy has destroyed nearly 90% of all thermal generation and 45% of hydropower generation, and due to this year's shelling, our country has lost 9 GW of capacity.
'The exhibited transformer has its own story—after the shelling, it burned for a day because it was impossible to extinguish. Unfortunately, due to the extensive damage, it cannot be restored. We placed it in Kyiv so that everyone could see it firsthand, just as energy workers do at thermal power plants and other energy facilities. However, despite all the challenges and daily risks of coming under enemy fire, Ukrainian energy workers continue their battle for light,' said DTEK's Executive Director, Dmytro Sakharuk.
