OpenAI has revised the rules for the use of its technologies, including ChatGPT. The usage policy no longer includes a prohibition on the use of services for military purposes.
As reported by The Intercept, until January 10, 2024, OpenAI's "Usage Policies" page explicitly prohibited "activity that poses a high risk of physical harm, including" the "development of weapons" and "military actions."
In the new version, the general prohibition on "military and combat" use has been removed.
OpenAI representative Niko Felix explained that the company "aims to create a set of universal principles that are easy to remember and apply, especially since their tools are now used worldwide by ordinary users, who can now also create GPT."
However, he declined to specify whether the broad prohibition covers any military use.
"Any use of our technologies, including by the military, for the development or use of weapons, harm to others, or destruction of property, or engagement in unauthorized activities that compromise the security of any service or system is prohibited," noted the company representative.
