The Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, Viktoriia Kyreeva, participated in the discussion "Tracking and Tackling Methane Emissions in Ukraine: Policies and Actions to Achieve Global Methane Goals." The event was organized by the DiXi Group analytical center and the Net Zero World Initiative in collaboration with the International Energy Agency and supported by the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Ukraine.
Participants discussed the current state of methane emissions measurement and reduction in Ukraine, prospects for improvement, and potential technological solutions prepared by DiXi Group (for the oil and gas sector) and the Net Zero World Initiative (for the coal industry).
"Methane is one of the most potent greenhouse gases, and its impact on climate change is 80 times stronger than CO₂ in the short term. Reducing methane emissions is one of the most effective ways to slow global warming," said Viktoriia Kyreeva.
To achieve this, Ukraine joined the Global Methane Pledge in 2021 and committed to reducing methane emissions by 30% by 2030. The need to harmonize legislation with European standards was also emphasized, particularly EU Regulation 2024/1787, which calls for the creation of a robust methane emissions monitoring and reporting system.
At COP29, Ukraine also presented the results of a cross-sectoral study on methane emissions, covering the oil and gas sector, coal industry, waste management, and agriculture. Ukraine is actively collaborating with international partners, including DiXi Group, the International Finance Corporation, the Net Zero World Initiative, and others.
