Latvian President Edgars RinkÄ“viÄs believes that an international tribunal to investigate Russia's war crimes should be established within the framework of the United Nations.
"Latvia is one of those active countries in the European Union and, I would even say, in the United Nations, which, together with Ukraine and Poland, is working to ensure that the idea of an international tribunal, condemnation, and investigation of war crimes is not somehow blurred," he said on Thursday in Riga at a press conference after talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
"We believe that such a tribunal should be carried out at the UN level. We also need to look at what other solutions can be effective and prevent Russian individuals from obtaining any immunity," said the President of Latvia.
He acknowledged that "convincing a whole range of countries is not that simple. Therefore, we are actively working on this."
Speaking about the confiscation of Russian assets, RinkÄ“viÄs noted that "there must still be a joint decision at the European level because these are assets at the level of the European Union, and that would then allow transferring these funds to the restoration of Ukraine or other measures to support Ukraine."
