Government officials from 100 countries have agreed to establish an International Platform for Climate Action. The decision was made at the Inclusive Forum on Carbon Mitigation Approaches (IFCMA), which was held in a hybrid format in Paris.
The event was attended by about 500 high-level government officials representing about 100 countries from around the world, excluding Russia and Belarus. Ukraine was represented by Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine Oleksandr Krasnolutskyy and Director of the Department of Permitting and Licensing Activities and Industrial Pollution Prevention Viktoriia Kirieieva.
The purpose of the newly created platform is to jointly address the challenges governments face in accelerating the transition to low-carbon technologies and the role IFCMA can play in supporting improved data and information.
It is worth noting that as of January 30, 2023, 133 countries, representing about 91% of global GDP and covering about 83% of global emissions, have endorsed zero net carbon emissions targets. In accordance with the principles of the multilateral climate policy architecture set out in the Paris Agreement, countries are either using or planning to use a wide range of policies to reduce emissions.
In 2021, the Government of Ukraine approved an updated Nationally Determined Contribution to the Paris Agreement, the plan of implementation of which will identify the necessary key measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
It is expected that the cooperation of different countries will contribute to strengthening global efforts to reduce emissions worldwide through better data and information sharing, evidence-based experience exchange, and inclusive multilateral dialogue.
