Bulgarian fact-checking news platform Factcheck.bg, known for countering Russian disinformation, experienced a cyberattack over the weekend, Euractiv reports.

The attack resulted in the deletion of numerous publications on the website, Facebook, and also altered posts from the Association of European Journalists - Bulgaria (AEJ), which manages the platform. Currently, there is no information available about the perpetrators behind the cyberattack.

Among the deleted Facebook posts were AEJ's stance on disputes involving the leader of the pro-Russian radical party "Vazrazhdane" with independent liberal media in Bulgaria, as well as viral fact-checking posts aimed at countering pro-Russian disinformation campaigns on Facebook.

"At present, it is impossible to determine whether this is a simple malware attack or a deliberate one that may be related to the activities of Factcheck.bg and AEJ - Bulgaria," commented the Association of European Journalists.

Some Facebook users reported that they cannot even see which of their posts were deleted since they only receive messages stating that their posts do not comply with community standards. The attack affected both current posts and those published several months ago.
