The Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, from the ruling party "Georgian Dream," announced on Monday that his party is once again initiating impeachment proceedings against President Salome Zourabichvili, as reported by NewsGeorgia.
He stated that the new petition is planned to be submitted to the Constitutional Court.
The reason for this second attempt at impeachment, as in the first, is Zourabichvili's foreign visits without government approval.
Papuashvili explained that the petition to the Constitutional Court would be filed before the elections, and the issue will be brought to a vote in Parliament during one of the first sessions after the elections.
If this attempt by 'Georgian Dream' is successful, Zourabichvili's term in office will be cut short by approximately a month.
According to Papuashvili, this step is more symbolic, aimed at ensuring that "the constitutional violator Salome Zourabichvili goes down in history not just as a former president, but as an 'impeached president.'"
'Georgian Dream' previously attempted to impeach Zourabichvili in October of last year due to her tour supporting Euro-integration without government permission. However, the ruling party lacked a few votes in Parliament to carry out its plan at that time.
As reported, the next parliamentary elections in Georgia are scheduled for October 26.
