Ukraine will receive a new air defense system IRIS-T from Germany already in May of the current year.
This was reported by the German Ambassador to Ukraine, Martin Jäger, during a national telethon.
The diplomat announced that some IRIS-T systems are already in Ukraine, and another one will be transferred to the Ukrainian Armed Forces in May. At the same time, the ambassador emphasized that Germany promised Ukraine to supply new IRIS-T systems this year, next year, and also in 2026, calling it a consistent effort.
"We are helping to restore primarily the energy infrastructure in view of the winter, but if there is no air defense system, it will certainly be very difficult to repel future attacks," he said.
The ambassador explained that Germany has decided to do even more than before in the field of air defense. The country already has obligations on this issue in NATO, and 25% of their Patriot systems will be located in Ukraine.
"There is no other country in the world that gives so much," Jäger said.
Germany announced the transfer of IRIS-T air defense systems to Ukraine as early as 2022 and has been working systematically in this direction. The complex enables the destruction of enemy cruise missiles and helicopters.
