The Italian government is convening consultations with the director of the National Cybersecurity Agency and the heads of intelligence services following cyberattacks targeting refrigeration systems in Italian supermarkets. This was reported by ANSA.

Several Coop supermarkets, including at least three in the Catania area and one in Palermo, were targeted by cyberattacks affecting the refrigeration systems of their food display counters.

Giuseppe Spadaro, general manager of the Radenza Group, which operates supermarkets under the Coop brand, confirmed the incidents.

According to Spadaro, the attack took place at around 04:00 and caused changes to temperature settings, resulting in overheating of refrigerated display units and food spoilage.

"We are assessing the damage. In some cases, we have already resolved the problem. We have contacted the National Cybersecurity Agency and activated the necessary protocols to conduct a thorough investigation," Spadaro said.

Italy's cybercrime police unit is investigating the origin and scale of the attacks and examining whether they are linked to similar incidents reported in other European countries.

The findings will be discussed at a meeting at Palazzo Chigi, chaired by Alfredo Mantovano, Secretary to Italy's Council of Ministers, with representatives of the country's intelligence services also attending.
