French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot and Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Energy Mykola Kolisnyk visited the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, the Ministry of Energy reported on Telegram on Monday.

The high-ranking officials inspected the work carried out on the new safe confinement structure and assessed the restoration progress of the facility damaged by a targeted Russian drone attack.

“Radiation safety is one of the ministry’s key priorities. Ukraine and France are countries with significant nuclear potential, so we must actively cooperate in this area,” said Mykola Kolisnyk.

Special attention was given to the threats posed by Russia’s military aggression and the actions of occupying forces toward Ukrainian nuclear facilities, particularly nuclear power plants.

“The discussions also covered prospects for cooperation with French partners in sharing experience and expert practices in nuclear safety, implementing joint projects on managing damaged spent nuclear fuel, and strengthening the physical protection of radioactive waste storage and disposal facilities,” the ministry reported.
