Ukraine's victory remains a priority for the European Union, which will continue to provide military and financial support.
This was stated by Kaja Kallas, the former Prime Minister of Estonia and candidate for the position of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, during hearings in the European Parliament's relevant committees in Brussels.
"The EU has two urgent priorities: Russia's war against Ukraine and the open conflict in the Middle East. Ukraine's victory is a priority for all of us. The situation on the battlefield is very difficult. That's why we must continue working every day... with much greater financial and military aid that is needed. This must be backed by a clear path for Ukraine’s EU accession," Kallas emphasized.
She stressed that by supporting Ukraine, the EU is securing its own European security and values, defending the UN Charter and its global principles.
Kallas also noted that the conflict in the Middle East, which erupted after the terrorist attack on Israel on October 7 last year, needs to be resolved based on principles supported by most EU member states.
This includes the need for an immediate ceasefire, the unconditional release of all hostages, the provision of humanitarian assistance, restraint by all parties, and a diplomatic solution based on the "two-state" principle, recognizing Israel's right to exist in the entire region.
“These will not be easy five years. Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine continues on the European continent. Autocratic coalitions are forming around us, and inevitable geopolitical shifts are happening globally. Actors like Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran aim to change the international order based on rules. I see China and Russia turning interdependence into a weapon and using our society's openness against us. We must be aware of the threat and respond accordingly, together with our partners and allies, never forgetting who we are," Kallas emphasized.
