Wine made from the Suholyman white grape variety at the 'Colonist' winery will now be called 'Odessa White.'

This was announced by 'Kolonist' on their Facebook page.

The idea for the new name had been in consideration for a while, particularly driven by foreign markets where pronouncing the word 'Suholyman' can be challenging.

It was during international presentations of Ukrainian wines that the Wines of Ukraine team heard suggestions like, 'If you have 'Odessa Black,' why not change the name to 'Odessa White' as well?'

In 2024, the winery in Bessarabia will be the first to implement this idea.

For reference: the Suholyman white grape variety was developed at the Tairov Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking in 1949 by crossing Chardonnay and Plavay. The variety gained widespread recognition through the efforts of the owner of the 'Kolonist' winery, Ivan Plachkov.
