Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council and former President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev has threatened to confiscate the assets of US citizens in response to the US law on transferring frozen Russian assets to Ukraine.
He announced this on his Telegram page.
"It is obvious that we cannot provide a fully symmetrical response to this American rudeness of shamelessly stealing our assets. The reason is clear - we do not have a significant amount of American state property.
Therefore, the response can only be asymmetric. It involves enforcement actions, for example, by court decision, on the property of private individuals within the jurisdiction of Russia," Medvedev stated.
Specifically, he refers to movable and immovable property of Americans, investments, assets, and other savings of US citizens.
The former President of Russia particularly mentions that Russian legislation has the necessary groundwork in the form of Article 1194 of the Civil Code of the Russian Federation, which provides for the restriction of property rights for citizens of a country that has done the same to Russian citizens. Medvedev proposes to expand this article to allow for the confiscation of property, not just its limitation.
On April 20, the US House of Representatives approved a bill that provides for the possibility of confiscating Russian sovereign assets in favor of Ukraine and expanding anti-Russian sanctions.
