Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, following the Coalition of the Willing meeting in Paris, confirmed that Italy will not send troops to Ukraine as part of security guarantees after a ceasefire agreement with Russia is reached.

The statement was published on the Italian government’s official website.

“Confirming Italy’s support for Ukraine on security issues, in line with long-standing practice, Prime Minister Meloni reiterated several consistent points of the Italian government’s position regarding security guarantees, specifically excluding the deployment of Italian forces on the ground,” the statement said.

It noted that the Paris meeting “provided an opportunity to confirm the high level of alignment between Ukraine, the United States, Europe, and other partners, and focused on enhancing security guarantees inspired by Article 5 of the Atlantic Alliance, as Italy has long proposed.”

“These guarantees will form part of a broader package of agreements, to be adopted in close coordination with Washington, to ensure Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence, including through an effective and well-structured mechanism for monitoring the desired ceasefire and strengthening the Ukrainian Armed Forces,” the statement added.

In this context, all members of the Coalition of the Willing also agreed on the importance and necessity of maintaining strong collective pressure on Russia.

“The voluntary nature of coalition countries’ participation in multinational forces and adherence to constitutional procedures for decision-making in support of Ukraine in the event of a future attack, as stated in the adopted declaration, reflect principles Italy has repeatedly confirmed,” the Italian government statement concluded.
