Naftogaz Group, specifically JSC Ukrgazvydobuvannya, has announced the start of a new stage of 3D seismic exploration in the western region of Ukraine. The survey will cover an area of 230 square kilometers, according to Serhii Koretskyi, Chairman of the Board of Naftogaz of Ukraine.

The company emphasizes that in the context of war and constant threats to energy infrastructure, intensifying geological exploration in the rear regions is strategically important for the country’s energy security.

"The West has traditionally been considered less promising due to the depletion of deposits. But modern technologies are changing the approach. Seismic surveys make it possible to detect new resources more accurately, even in long-developed areas. Based on the results of this research, we expect to begin drilling in 2026–2027," Koretskyi noted.

Between 2019 and 2023, the company already conducted seismic surveys over more than 1,600 km² in the region. This enabled the drilling of over 10 new wells, four of which showed yields between 80,000 and 270,000 cubic meters of gas per day — a significant result for a region where production began over a century ago.

Over the past five years, Ukrgazvydobuvannya has increased gas reserves in western Ukraine by 2.4 billion cubic meters.
