Restorers of the 'Thousands of Doors of Odessa' project have restored the oak entrance doors of the Leonid Karavodin building in Odessa, located at 8 Sofiivska Street. The doors were designed by architect Demosfen Mazirov in 1890.
They were damaged during a Russian attack on November 6, 2023, when a Russian missile fell just 30 meters from the building's doors. The shockwave caused the door panels to be torn off their hinges, destroying the decor and panels, and damaging the doorframe structure. During this attack, the facades of the Odesa National Art Museum and residential buildings were also damaged.
"These doors have survived decades, the change of eras, and generations, but in an instant, they were on the brink of disappearing," say the restorers.
They restored the lost decorative elements, added missing fragments to the frame, and installed brass handles and a mascaron.
The restoration took nine months.
"Now, the entrance and vestibule doors work in sync, maintaining a stable climate in the entrance hall," the community adds.
