In 2024 alone, the execution of 109 Ukrainian prisoners of war by Russian forces was officially confirmed. However, there has been no effective response from the international community to these war crimes.
This was reported by the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, during a national telethon.
"We have managed to officially document more violations of the rights of Ukrainian prisoners of war, including cynical close-range executions, unfortunately. In 2024 alone, it was officially confirmed that Russians executed 109 Ukrainian POWs. By comparison, in previous years, the total number recorded was 177, which shows a significant increase in 2024," said Lubinets.
According to him, intelligence and law enforcement agencies have frequently provided information about Russian violations of POW rights.
"Unfortunately, I could not publicly disclose these examples of blatant violations of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions. When we managed to document them, we did so," the ombudsman added.
At the same time, he pointed out that the international community has failed to respond effectively to these war crimes.
