Volodymyr Zelensky discussed the humanitarian situation in the temporarily occupied town of Oleshky in the Kherson region during a telephone conversation with Pope Leo XIV, expressing hope that humanitarian aid could be delivered and civilians safely evacuated.

This was reported by Vatican News.

According to a statement from the Holy See Press Office, the Pontiff drew attention to the difficult situation in Oleshky and recalled his earlier appeal to Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin for a humanitarian ceasefire.

"The Pope expressed hope that cooperation between both sides would make it possible to deliver food and medical assistance, as well as ensure the voluntary and safe evacuation of civilians," the statement said.

At the end of the conversation, Pope Leo XIV reaffirmed the Holy See's commitment to dialogue and peace.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that he had also discussed Russia's escalation and its continued strikes against Ukrainian cities and communities with the Pontiff.

"I spoke with Pope Leo XIV and wished His Holiness a full and speedy recovery following his surgery. We are grateful that even during this difficult personal period, His Holiness remembers Ukraine and prays for our people.

"I briefed him in detail on the situation regarding Russia's escalation and its constant strikes against Ukrainian cities and communities. Of course, we also discussed all the current security challenges and threats, including the occasional absence of warnings from our partners about Russian ballistic missile attacks, which has happened three times recently," Zelensky said.

He thanked the Pontiff for his support and all his efforts towards achieving a just and dignified peace.
