President Volodymyr Zelensky stated this from Abu Dhabi during an online press conference with Ukrainian journalists.
When asked about changes in European policy regarding support for Ukraine, the head of state said:
"Europe already knows that it must change and grow in terms of weaponry, defense, artificial intelligence, the agricultural sector, and energy... Moreover, it must allow for the development of all types of energy. It seems we should look at it this way: green energy is understandable, but we realize it will not be enough. For example, the gas sector also needs development. Nuclear energy with Ukraine is very important, and the French have great expertise in this."
Zelensky emphasized that nuclear energy is also "a real security guarantee."
"If you ask our partners, they all say: yes, we understand that if not for nuclear power, Ukraine could have simply… at the very least, lost every winter… If we talk about security guarantees, then what about the Zaporizhzhia plant? Is it a security guarantee for us and for Europe? Yes, it is! These are crucial conditions. Today, the plant is not operating, and it won’t function without us—that is simply impossible! But we will generate electricity, supply it to our consumers, and sell it to Europe. In other words, we will provide security for everyone," the President stressed.
The head of state underscored that Europe must change and develop regardless.
"Europe needs to be stronger because the U.S. is focusing more on its internal issues. Yes, 'America first' is the current U.S. policy, and that is their right and choice. It is understandable, as they are a self-sufficient country. However, I believe it would be dangerous for everyone if America distances itself from the close alliance it currently has with Europe. If they do pull back—whether in weapons, economics, or energy—it will be dangerous, as Russia will take advantage of it. And it will do so. I think that is not a good scenario, but it is the choice of the United States of America," Zelensky said.
