Ukrainians continue to actively switch to cashless payments. This is evidenced by the data from the National Bank for the first half of 2025.
The total number of transactions using payment cards issued by Ukrainian banks reached 4.6 billion for a total amount of over 3.4 trillion UAH. The vast majority were cashless transactions — 4.4 billion worth a total of 2.2 trillion UAH. This is 12.6% and 11.2% more, respectively, compared to the same period last year.
Cashless transactions account for 95.3% of the total number of payment card transactions and 65.3% of their total value. For comparison, in the first half of 2024, these figures were 94.6% and 64.5%, respectively.
The largest share of cashless transactions is in payments within retail and service networks — nearly three-quarters of all transactions by number and half by value.
During January – July, the average amount of a single transaction was:
- in retail and service networks — 342 UAH (321 UAH in the first half of 2024),
- card-to-card transfers — 1,835 UAH (1,936 UAH),
- online payments for goods and services — 589 UAH (543 UAH).
The country’s payment infrastructure is also expanding. The number of active POS terminals increased by 7.9% over six months to almost 536,000, and the number of points of sale accepting cards grew by 10.1% — to over 570,000.
At the same time, the ATM network slightly decreased by 1.2% and now numbers 15,500 devices.
Contactless and tokenized payments are becoming increasingly popular. The number of tokenized cards has grown by 8% since the beginning of the year, reaching 17.8 million — almost every third active card is now tokenized.
Transactions involving physical card data reading account for only 2.8% of the total value and 2% of the total number, which is twice less than last year. The rest of the transactions are carried out contactlessly via cards or smartphones, totaling over 1 trillion UAH.
