During the construction of fortifications in Mykolaiv region, burials dating back to the 6th-5th centuries BC were discovered, reported by the 123rd Territorial Defense Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
The excavator driver noticed a small amphora and decided to show it to his comrade, who is passionate about history. The territorial defense soldiers decided to hand over the find to the local "Staroflotski Kazarmy" museum.
At the museum, it was identified as a Korinthian amphora, used in ritual ceremonies and placed directly in graves. The museum staff also discovered an Ionian vessel, known as an oinochoe. This ancient Greek jug, with a single handle and three spouts, was used for pouring wine during ritualized banquets.
“These are ritual items, specifically created for burials, brought from Greece. It is significant that the vessels are intact, with no damage, indicating the high social status of the buried individuals,” said former archaeologist and current serviceman, Oleksandr.
Along with the artifacts, the soldiers handed over the remains of the buried individuals to the museum.
