The Italian TV company Rai canceled the participation of Russian propagandist Vladimir Solovyov on Massimo Giletti’s “Lo stato delle cose” after pressure from European Parliament Vice President Pina Picierno. She stated that Italy's state television should not become a platform for spreading Russian disinformation, as reported by Decode39.

"No megaphone for Russian propaganda"

Solovyov, known for his provocative statements and support for the Kremlin, has been under EU sanctions since 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. In Italy, he had already attracted attention from authorities—his property on Lake Como, valued at 8 million euros, was seized by Italian law enforcement.

The ban on his appearance on air became a symbolic rejection by Italy of the resumed influence of Russian propaganda. This move comes amid attempts by Russian diplomats to discredit Italian President Sergio Mattarella and a rise in cyberattacks on Italian websites.

Rai's decision sparked political resonance. The opposition "Five Star Movement" and the ruling "League" share similar anti-European views, intensifying debates around the country's foreign policy. Former Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte criticized the EU's 800 billion euro rearmament plan and proposed holding a new security conference. League leader Matteo Salvini also made peace-oriented statements, which provoked mixed reactions in political circles.

Solovyov's planned appearance has officially been canceled, and Italy once again emphasized its stance in the fight against Russian influence in the European media space.
