Péter Szijjártó and Sergei Aleinik spoke about peace and cooperation between Budapest and Minsk.

Yesterday's visit of Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó to Minsk ended with the signing a cooperation agreement. According to BelTA, the agreement includes economic cooperation, and measures to stimulate educational and cultural exchanges, and also provides for meetings of the intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation in the spring.

“Fortunately, there are still areas that are not affected by the sanctions against Belarus, and today we agreed to develop our cooperation, in particular, this is agriculture and the food industry, where there is already significant Hungarian exports, as well as the pharmaceutical industry, where our companies will carry out the purchase of medicines for 60 million dollars. It is also important for many that we exchanged transport permits today to remove obstacles for transport companies from Belarus and Hungary that deliver goods between our countries," Szijjártó said in a Facebook post.

In addition, Hungarian Foreign Minister and Belarusian Foreign Minister Sergei Aleinik said that this visit would be a signal for other countries to engage in dialogue with Minsk. Szijjártó also noted that he requested Aleinik to do everything to achieve peace.

"Now there is nothing more important than saving human lives … During our meeting in Minsk, I stressed several times that we, Hungarians, are on the side of peace," the Hungarian added.

Hungary and cooperation with Russia and Belarus

  • In early February, the Hungarian Prime Minister said that his country bordered on the Russians in the East.
  • Orban also said that Budapest would veto any energy sanctions against Russia.
  • And in January, Hungary sought to lift sanctions on Russian oligarchs.
