Latvia has sent 271 cars confiscated for drunk driving to Ukraine.
The total value of the confiscated cars is estimated at almost one million euros, according to Delfi.
According to the Latvian State Revenue Service, since the beginning of 2023, 271 cars have been transferred to Ukraine, with a total preliminary value of 903,453 euros.
In addition, the government is considering documents for the transfer of another 34 cars to Ukraine, with a total value of 161,880 euros.
On March 7, 2023, the Latvian Saeima unanimously supported amendments to the law on supporting the civilian population of Ukraine, creating grounds for transferring confiscated vehicles from drunk drivers to Ukraine.
At present, we can sell cars confiscated from drunk drivers, recycle them, or dismantle them for parts. However, we see that under the current conditions, they would be a useful support for the people of Ukraine," said the Chairman of the Defense Commission, Raimonds Bergmanis.
The decision to transfer the cars in each case will be made by the Latvian Cabinet of Ministers.
The transfer process is planned to be organized through an organization that collaborates with the government of Ukraine and has received specific requests for assistance.
The first eight confiscated cars were sent to Ukraine the next day.
Confiscated cars, in particular, were received by the Vinnytsia Regional Clinical Hospital and the territorial medical association of the Kupiansk Council, as well as military units.
