Law enforcement officials in Latvia are preparing for intensive work this weekend during the Russian presidential "elections," anticipating various provocations.
The Chief of the Border Guard, Guntis PujÄts, made this statement, as reported by LSM.lv.
There is news that Russia may deploy "campaign buses" near the borders of Baltic countries. Therefore, individuals crossing the border with Russia will be subject to more thorough checks.
The weekend will be challenging also because the dates of these "elections" coincide with the celebration of other important events in Latvia's history. PujÄts warned of the risk of provocations.
The Chief of Police also stated that they plan to scrutinize everyone who visits the territory of the Russian embassy.
"Accordingly, 'corridors' will be created, involving the State Border Guard with relevant experts, systems, databases, and everything else, so that we can conduct checks," he said.
In Russia, the "presidential elections" will last for three days, from March 15th to March 17th, 2024. On December 8th, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin officially announced his intention to run for re-election.
