The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova has declared a staff member of the Russian embassy persona non grata. The ministry informed Russian Ambassador Oleg Vasnetsov in Chișinău of this decision.
According to NewsMaker, the expulsion decision was based on collected information and evidence indicating that the Russian diplomat was engaged in activities incompatible with diplomatic status.
The Russian embassy employee declared persona non grata must leave the country. According to TV8, the individual in question is a military attaché of the diplomatic mission.
Recently, in Moldova, employees of the Information and Security Service and the Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases conducted searches in the parliament building as part of a treason investigation.
As part of the investigation, Ion Creangă, head of the legal department, and a Border Police officer were detained for 72 hours on suspicion of espionage for Russia.
The investigation suggests that they were in contact with a staff member of the Russian embassy and passed information to him in exchange for monetary compensation.
