The Director of Moldova's Information and Security Service (SIB), Alexandru Musteață, warned of the likelihood of large-scale Russian interference in the country’s parliamentary elections in 2025.

This was reported by NewsMaker.

He made this statement during a presentation in parliament, where risks associated with Russian interference in Moldova’s internal processes were discussed.

According to Musteață, Russia intends to repeat the tactics it already used during the presidential elections and constitutional referendum in Moldova in 2024. These include:

  • Corruption in political and electoral processes;
  • Active disinformation and media manipulation;
  • Organizing street protests and unrest.

A particular role in implementing this strategy, he noted, is played by a criminal network associated with Ilan Shor, a fugitive Moldovan oligarch linked to close ties with Moscow.

According to the head of the SIB, Moscow seeks to establish control over Moldova’s parliament to influence the country’s policy. This would allow the Kremlin to strengthen its presence in the region and hinder Moldova's European integration.

Musteață emphasized that Moldovan intelligence services are working to strengthen national security, increasing oversight of organizations that may be connected to Russia.

He added that it is also important to engage international support to prevent interference in the electoral process.

Russia denies allegations of interfering in Moldova's elections.
