The European trading division of Naftogaz Ukraine has received certification to trade biomethane, which is significant given the group's interest in developing the biomethane market.
This was announced by Denis Kostiuk, Head of the Business Development Department at Naftogaz.
“Developing the biomethane market is an important direction for us because we have all the necessary infrastructure. Recently, our European trading company (Naftogaz Trading Europe AG – responsible for trading in Europe) received certification to trade biomethane. We are now offering sellers of biomethane offtake contracts on market terms,” Kostiuk said during Energy Day 2025, held by the European Business Association in Kyiv on Wednesday.
In comments to journalists backstage at the conference, he noted that Naftogaz offers biomethane producers “everything — from connecting plants to the network to purchasing their products.”
“We are doing our best to encourage private companies to invest in biomethane production. This is interesting for us in terms of developing our business and utilizing our infrastructure. We assure that all possibilities exist for rapid, quality connection of plants to store and transport biomethane. We are ready to provide purchase conditions at the same level as European companies,” Kostiuk explained.
According to him, Naftogaz can buy biomethane through its European company because under current Ukrainian law only the producer can export and resell in Europe.
“This can be attractive to Ukrainian producers, because cooperating with us will be easier and more convenient than dealing with European traders. There is no need to create a separate staff or learn sales conditions,” said the head of Naftogaz’s department.
He emphasized that the company is working to attract as many producers as possible.
Kostiuk also added that a dedicated service center for potential biomethane producers has been established on the basis of LLC Gas Distribution Networks of Ukraine.
