In Romania, two F-16 fighter jets and two Eurofighter aircraft were deployed in response to a Russian drone attack on Ukraine.

This was reported by Agerpres, citing Romania's Ministry of National Defense (MApN).

"On the night of April 28-29, Russian forces launched a series of drone strikes on civilian objects and port infrastructure near the Ukrainian border with Romania. In connection with this, the National Military Command Center informed the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations on Monday around 11:30 PM about the declaration of an air alert in Tulcea County, and a warning was sent to the population in the northeastern part of the county via the RO-ALERT system," the ministry reported.

It was noted that MApN's monitoring and surveillance systems continuously tracked the airspace in this zone.

According to procedures, two F-16 aircraft of the Romanian Air Force and two Eurofighter aircraft of the Italian Air Force, part of the air policing mission, were deployed from the 86th and 57th Air Bases to conduct surveillance and protect Romanian airspace.

The air alert was lifted at around 4:50 AM on Tuesday, April 29, and the combat aircraft returned to their bases.

"During Russia's attacks on Ukrainian targets, Romania’s radar monitoring system indicated that the trajectory of one of the drones involved in the attack briefly crossed Romania's national airspace, approximately 500 meters into Romanian territory, around 8 kilometers east of the village of K.A. Rosetti, Tulcea County. The last contact with this aerial target was recorded over Ukrainian territory," the Romanian Ministry of Defense stated.

The ministry added that surveys will be conducted in areas where there might be "risks" as a result of these incidents and that airspace monitoring missions will continue.

Allied structures are also being kept informed of the situations arising from the attacks, the statement said.

The Romanian Ministry of National Defense condemned the Russian attack on Ukraine.
