Romania is concerned about potential Russian interference in the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections, which are set to take place in less than two weeks. Russia may attempt to influence the elections through trusted individuals, organizations, affiliated structures, and even specific candidates, according to Digi24.

Romanian parliamentarians have urged authorities to investigate whether countries like Russia, China, and North Korea, or hackers, might be involved in the electoral process. Recently, the chair of the parliamentary committee emphasized the importance of this issue, noting that competent authorities must promptly address such threats.

There are also concerns about the activity of so-called "troll networks." The Minister of Digitalization stated that accounts linked to organized networks spreading illegitimate content in support of certain candidates were identified on Romanian social media. Additionally, Romanian police have opened a criminal case in connection with suspected attempts to interfere with the election process.

Amid rising tensions, Romania's Information and Security Service (SRI) is closely monitoring the activities of Russian citizens and entities that could undermine Romania's membership in the EU and NATO.

Local authorities and law enforcement are taking all necessary measures to prevent election interference and ensure their integrity, according to sources from the publication.
