Deputy Ministers of Defense of Ukraine, Oleksandr Balanutsa and Dmytro Klimenkov, held a meeting with Simon Birmingham, the leader of the opposition in the Australian Senate and shadow foreign minister. The discussion centered on Ukraine's military needs and the prospects for expanding bilateral defense cooperation.

Oleksandr Balanutsa briefed the Australian delegation on the Ukrainian army's needs and expressed hope for continued fruitful cooperation both bilaterally and within international alliances. He emphasized the importance of strategic partnership between the countries, especially in the context of global security challenges.

The Deputy Minister thanked Australia for its support of the Ukrainian army and invited Australia to join the de-mining coalition in support of the Defense Forces. He also encouraged the Australian government and defense companies to invest in Ukraine's military industry.

“We believe that Australia can make a significant contribution to Ukraine’s victory over Russian aggression, particularly in the fields of defense, economy, training, and exchange of experience,” said Oleksandr Balanutsa.

He also proposed that the Australian government sign a bilateral security agreement with Ukraine.

The meeting also addressed issues related to the supply of weapons and equipment. According to the defense ministry, as of the end of August 2024, Australia’s total assistance amounts to 1.3 billion Australian dollars, of which 1.1 billion is allocated for military support.

Deputy Minister of Defense Dmytro Klimenkov noted, “Ukraine is sincerely grateful to Australia for its unwavering political, humanitarian, and military support. Australia remains the largest military contributor to Ukraine outside of NATO, demonstrating its resolve to stand with us in the fight for freedom and democracy.”

Ukraine is open to exploring various cooperation options to ensure the rapid implementation of new technologies and solutions to strengthen its defense capabilities.

“We are ready for close dialogue with Australian partners to jointly seek effective solutions in defense and security. Together, we can develop innovative approaches that will enhance the capabilities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces,” concluded Dmytro Klimenkov.
