At Lviv’s “OKHMATDYT” Hospital, doctors from the United States will perform up to 20 complex reconstructive surgeries.

This was reported by the Lviv Regional Council.

“Within the Clinical Center for Pediatric Medicine — OKHMATDYT Hospital, as part of the ninth Reconstruction Mission, a team of doctors from the United States plans to perform about 20 complex reconstructive surgeries,” the statement reads.

It notes that on the first day, the doctors provided 50 consultations, including 15 in orthognathic (bone-reconstructive) facial surgery and more than 30 in lip, palate, and nose reconstruction. Patients came from all over Ukraine, including from frontline regions. Another approximately 30 consultations were conducted online. This time, the team brought about 25 individual 3D-printed implants for six patients. Each set costs between $7,000 and $10,000, but patients receive them free of charge. These implants help restore facial bone structures after injuries or congenital defects. According to mission participant and maxillofacial surgeon at the Center for Pediatric Medicine, Khrystyna Pohrynichna, alongside their U.S. colleagues, Ukrainian doctors are learning not only new techniques but also the culture of mentorship and team support.

“This helps us grow as specialists,” Pohrynichna emphasized.

The regional council reminded that the Reconstruction Mission is a long-term international mentorship program in which John L. Frodel Jr. and John M. Sands, founder of Advancing Residents of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons (AROMS), work alongside Ukrainian doctors.

The mission is initiated by the Christian Medical Association of Ukraine within the EduCare project, together with partners Ed’s Friends, LEAP Global Missions, and Razom for Ukraine.

Since the program’s inception, the Reconstruction Mission has already helped over 900 patients, including children and military personnel who needed complex reconstructions. New missions and even broader cooperation between Ukrainian and international teams are planned, the statement notes.
