The Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of Luxembourg, Xavier Bettel, criticized Hungary's position, which hinders the start of negotiations on Ukraine's membership in the EU. He made the corresponding statement on December 12 in Brussels.

He pointed out that Hungary should remember the conditions it was in when joining the European Union before asserting that Ukraine is too poor to join the EU.

"If, when Hungary was seeking membership, we asked whether Hungary was rich enough to become a member of the European Union, perhaps Hungary would not be a member today," said Xavier Bettel.

"It's also about solidarity to reap potential benefits from partners and about democratic values. We're not at the market to bargain. We don't set prices," he added.

If Hungary vetoes the decision to start negotiations with Ukraine on EU membership, it must properly justify it, said Bettel.
