For a ceasefire on the battlefield between Ukraine and Russia to work, there must be a deterrent factor.

This was stated by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, in an interview with Euronews.

"For a ceasefire to work, there must be deterrence. Putin has previously demonstrated that he does not adhere to ceasefire agreements," she noted.

Kallas questioned the "goodwill" of Russian leader Vladimir Putin and the feasibility of the limited 30-day ceasefire he agreed upon with US President Donald Trump.

She also emphasized that the stronger the European Union is, the less likely the possibility of war.

"We need to do more for our defense. We also need to do more for Ukraine; the stronger they are on the battlefield, the stronger they will be at the negotiating table," she added.
