In Mykolaiv, thanks to international partners and donors, the largest underground school-kindergarten has opened ahead of the new school year, and shelters were also set up in a gymnasium and another kindergarten.
Vitalii Kim, head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, reported on Telegram:
“Thanks to international partners and donors, by the start of the new school year in Mykolaiv we are opening two modern and safe shelters. The first is in a shared educational space based on a kindergarten and gymnasium, the second for another city kindergarten.”
Kim noted that the school-kindergarten shelter has become the largest underground educational space in the city and region. Overall, the new shelters allow more than 700 children to return to in-person classes.
The total area of the two renovated locations exceeds 1,700 square meters. The OVA head added that renovation of the shelters began in January 2025 and was completed in the summer.
The shelters provide space for lessons during air raid alerts and include areas for play, development, and rest for the youngest children.
The project is being implemented with the support of the savED charitable foundation, the LEGO Foundation, and the Kingdom of Denmark.
“Additional underground spaces will be created. The total investment by our partners in the region’s educational infrastructure exceeds 50 million hryvnias,” Kim added.
