The Ministry of Digital Transformation and Nokia will continue to jointly develop Ukraine's telecom infrastructure, integrate Ukraine into the international telecom market, increase the number of Ukrainian telecom specialists and strengthen the capacity of Internet networks. This was agreed upon by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov and Nokia CEO Pekka Lundmark during a meeting in Davos.

"We are grateful to the international tech giant for its comprehensive assistance in the telecommunications sector. We already have the first results of cooperation. Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Nokia has delivered 1,770 Beacons to Ukraine to provide Internet access to shelters in schools. Next week we will receive the second batch of 3,230 Beacons. This will enable even more Ukrainian schoolchildren to continue their education even during air raids. I am confident that together we will make the digital infrastructure even more resilient and modern," said Mykhailo Fedorov.

“The entire Nokia team is united in its support for Ukraine and Ukrainians, and it was a privilege to tell Vice Prime Minister Fedorov this at Davos. Since the beginning of Russia’s invasion, Nokia has been delivering support to Ukrainian customers and partners in order to maintain information and communication technology infrastructure despite Russian attacks. This support will continue and will contribute to Ukraine’s infrastructure, digitalization, cybersecurity and future rebuilding” said Pekka Lundmark, President and CEO of Nokia.

Nokia will create a separate group of experts to support Ukraine. They will work on projects to restore, increase the resilience and modernize Ukraine's Internet networks, optimize the management of state-owned enterprise networks, and cybersecurity.

Future projects also include the construction of a major Internet line across the Black Sea. This will provide an Internet connection between Finland and Asia and the Middle East via Ukraine.

As a result, Ukraine will become more attractive to global IT companies. After all, the ability to use a secure Internet network to communicate between company offices in different countries is one of the important conditions that influences the decision to open a business. This allows companies to exchange large amounts of data securely and quickly.

Other joint plans include:

  • creating a local team to prioritize Ukrainian restoration projects;
  • exploring opportunities to upgrade Ukraine’s communications infrastructure to the newest technologies such as 5G, also to increase networks capacity, with Ukrainian customers and partners;
  • exploring projects to develop digital skills and capacity;
  • exploring the potential of international connectivity solutions to make Ukraine a digital hub connecting Europe and Asia.

Nokia will advise Ukraine on developing strategies, policies, and practices that support digitalization. In addition, the company will provide expert support for the implementation of Smart City solutions and data centers.
