State Enterprise Calea Ferată din Moldova (Moldovan Railways) plans to resume the transit of Ukrainian cargo to and from the European Union via Moldova’s railway lines.

This was reported by Calea Ferată din Moldova.

Representatives of Calea Ferată din Moldova, in search of sustainable solutions to settle wage arrears and improve the financial situation, headed by Acting General Director Serhii Kotelnyk, paid a working visit to Kyiv.

"The purpose of the trip is to explore opportunities for restoring the transit of Ukrainian cargo to and from the European Union via Moldova’s railway lines, considering that due to the current regional situation caused by the war in Ukraine, cargo and passenger flows through Moldova were effectively rerouted," the company stated.

Chairman of the Board of JSC Ukrzaliznytsia Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, in turn, expressed readiness to look for joint solutions.

The parties discussed the need to resume the passenger route Chișinău–Odessa, which is planned to launch with the opening of the summer season.

Representatives of the railway companies also discussed the possibility of using Moldova’s railway for ferry transport of freight wagons from the port of Chornomorsk (Ukraine) to the port of Batumi (Georgia).

"The participants of the meeting were interested in the proposal to create and develop a unified freight wagon database in order to facilitate efficient border crossing between the two countries," added Calea Ferată din Moldova.
