Ukraine must be in the strongest possible position when it decides to negotiate with Russia. This is the essence of the global geopolitical context.
This statement was made by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte during the 'Ramstein' meeting.
"The global context is that we have to bring Ukraine in the best possible position. That one day, when talks would start, at the initiative of Ukraine, on how to solve this conflict, that they are in the best possible position to do that. ," Rutte said.
He emphasized the importance of ensuring that the agreement reached through negotiations would be beneficial. Failure to achieve such an agreement will be closely observed by nations like China, North Korea, Iran, and Russia.
"The whole world is watching. So, we have to make sure that Ukraine is in the best possible position. And we should not forget that there is this geopolitical context at stake here," the NATO Secretary General underscored.
Currently, Ukraine and Russia are not engaged in peace talks. However, Western media have increasingly reported that negotiations might start as early as 2025.
These assumptions partly arise from the possibility of Donald Trump returning to the White House. Trump has stated his intention to bring Ukraine and Russia to the negotiating table.
Ukraine, however, maintains that it will return to negotiations only from a position of strength, while keeping the door open for diplomacy.
