Work is continuing in the southern Odessa region to pump water from the Danube River into the Katlabuh Reservoir.

The State Agency of Ukraine for the Development of Land Reclamation, Fisheries and Food Programmes reported this.

“Three powerful pumping units with a combined capacity of 10 cubic metres per second are currently operating. They are pumping water into the reservoir to stabilise the water balance and prevent a further decline in water levels,” the agency said.

As part of the government’s comprehensive water supply programme for areas affected by the war, the State Fisheries Agency plans to raise the water level in the Katlabuh Reservoir to its normal retention level of 1.7 metres. UAH 39.5 million has been allocated for these measures.

The need to pump water into Katlabuh arose after prolonged heat caused the reservoir’s water level to fall critically low.

The reservoir is of strategic importance to Bessarabia. It provides irrigation for around 24,000 hectares of agricultural land across eight irrigation systems in the Izmail and Bolhrad districts, as well as water for household and municipal needs in seven communities.
