Counterintelligence of the Security Service of Ukraine has prevented the illegal sale of cutting-edge technologies from Ukraine’s defense-industrial complex. As a result of a comprehensive operation, a representative of a private company was detained in Odessa after offering a bribe to obtain classified documentation related to aviation developments.
According to the case materials, the classified information concerned the modernization of onboard equipment for Ukrainian Armed Forces combat aircraft.
To gain access to technical documentation and design drawings, the suspect attempted to bribe an engineer at a local plant that conducts R&D for Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense.
SSU officers documented the suspect’s criminal actions and detained him in the act while he was handing over the bribe to the defense enterprise official.
The detainee has been formally charged under Part 3 of Article 369 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (offering an unlawful benefit to an official).
He faces up to 8 years in prison with asset confiscation.
An investigation is ongoing to clarify all the circumstances of the crime. Among other things, efforts are being made to determine the motives behind the attempt to obtain classified defense-industry documents.
