With the support of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the military counterintelligence of the Security Service has detained a "double" agent of the Russian Federation in Lviv region who was simultaneously working for the FSB and Russian military intelligence (commonly known as the GRU).
According to case materials, the Russian collaborator turned out to be an instructor at the Yavoriv military training ground.
His task from the GRU was to prepare terrorist attacks against commanders of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who were undergoing combat training with their units at the local Defense Forces training center.
It was documented that the agent received a "carte blanche" from his handler to choose the method for eliminating Ukrainian military personnel.
According to one of the scenarios, the traitor was to manufacture an improvised explosive device (IED) and secretly plant it in a headquarters or training building.
The agent also considered using an unsuspecting colleague to carry a concealed explosive device to the commanders’ training location.
Another method the mole considered was coordinating a Russian missile strike using the coordinates of the current gathering point of Ukrainian defenders at the training ground.
SSU military counterintelligence exposed the hostile plans in advance, documented them, and detained the traitor while he was preparing proposals for assassinations to submit to his handler.
The investigation also confirmed the agent's contact with an FSB handler. Under his direction, the agent collected information on the number and types of units training at the Yavoriv base.
During searches, three mobile phones with SIM cards used to hide communications with the Russian forces were seized from the detainee.
Based on the gathered evidence, SBU investigators formally charged him under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (high treason committed under martial law).
The suspect is currently held in custody without bail. He faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
