Ukraine and the United Kingdom launch cooperation in science, technology, and innovation (STI) within the framework of the British-Ukrainian 100-year partnership, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine reports.

"During the event, Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Oksen Lysovyi and the UK Minister for Science, Research and Innovation, Lord Vallance, presented priorities for cooperation in the STI sector. Both sides plan to develop a long-term institutional partnership between Ukrainian and British scientists and to use science as a tool to strengthen national capacities, support recovery, and promote development. This was highlighted in the Ministry’s statement following the event held in London, United Kingdom.

The Ministry also recalled that in January 2025, the UK and Ukraine signed an agreement on a 100-year partnership, with science and technology as one of its key components. Thanks to the Researchers at Risk program, over 170 Ukrainian scientists affected by the war have been able to continue their work at more than 70 UK universities.

How the scientific partnership between Ukraine and the UK works:

  • Thanks to the Researchers at Risk program, over 170 Ukrainian scientists affected by the war have been able to continue their work at more than 70 UK universities.
  • Under the UK-Ukraine Twinning initiative, universities from both countries create joint projects, pool resources, and share expertise.
  • They conduct collaborative scientific research to support defense and innovation development, including:
  • Developing artificial intelligence for rapid and accurate detection of shrapnel injuries (Warwick University in cooperation with Kharkiv National University of Radio Electronics).
  • Strengthening Ukraine’s energy grid through green energy (Manchester, Aston, and Aberystwyth Universities working with Ukrainian experts).
  • The UK-Ukraine TechBridge initiative opens opportunities for cooperation in innovative technologies for critical tasks, such as demining. TechBridge also covers AI, healthcare, cybersecurity, education, and agritech, creating new opportunities for trade, investment, and development in both countries.
