The European Commission has allocated Ukraine the ninth tranche of its macro-financial assistance (MFA) emergency loan, totaling €4 billion, the Commission’s press service reported.

“This further strengthens the EU’s role as the largest donor since the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine, with total support approaching €178 billion,” the statement said.

The overall MFA program budget is €18.1 billion and represents the EU’s contribution to the G7 ERA loan initiative, which is expected to provide Ukraine with around €45 billion in financial support.

“With this tranche, total support for Ukraine from the European Commission under the MFA program has reached €14 billion since the beginning of 2025,” the Commission noted.

The EU’s move reaffirms its commitment to supporting Ukraine, following a recent statement by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on providing a €6 billion initial contribution to the ERA loan initiative.

“This support will help Ukraine meet growing funding needs, particularly in the defense sector,” the Commission added.

Specifically, €2 billion from this tranche will be allocated for the production of drones under the EU-Ukraine agreement.

Prime Minister Yuliya Svyrydenko noted that the tranche is funded from frozen assets of the Russian Central Bank held within the EU.

“Ukraine has received the EU macro-financial assistance tranche of €4 billion under the ERA Loans mechanism. Symbolically, the payment was made today, on Ukraine’s Defenders’ Day,” she wrote on Telegram.

According to the Prime Minister, this is an important signal of Europe’s determination to strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities and provide long-term support.
