The Ukrainian Oscar Committee has concluded the submission process and announced the four films competing for the country's nomination in the Best International Feature Film category for the 2025 Oscars. The films are:
-
Slovo House, directed by Taras Tomenko. This historical drama depicts the lives of Ukrainian writers during the era of the Executed Renaissance, exploring how a communist paradise turned into a communist hell.
-
La Paliciada, directed by Filip Sotnychenko. Set in 1996, this film follows two old friends—a detective and a forensic psychiatrist—investigating the murder of a colleague while revisiting their shared past and unfulfilled dreams.
-
We Were Recruits, directed by Lyubomyr Levytsky. This film focuses on the stories of soldiers from the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade, highlighting the personal lives and dreams of the fighters alongside their military experiences.
-
Intercepted, directed by Oksana Karpovych. This film presents a dual perspective of destruction and rebirth in Ukrainian villages and cities after liberation from Russian occupation, aiming to provide hope and balance amidst media portrayals of horror.
The Ukrainian Oscar Committee will assess these films for compliance with the American Academy's requirements and will select the official nominee on September 9.
